If you are rebuilding or rewiring, and need to move out for as long as the work goes on, first find out how long the renovations will take.
You should hold your contractor to the time period he gives you, because it will affect your rental arrangements. Any overrun in the schedule will almost certainly cost you a lot more in money and inconvenience, especially if you are renting a place to stay.
Once you have determined the time frame and secured a place to live in for the time being, you have a great opportunity to go through your belongings and declutter. Get each member of the family to sort out his or her stuff and mark out items for discarding or giving away, then get them out of your house. Why pay the movers to move what you could dispose of instead?
Note, however, that bulky items that the recycling company won’t take will have to be discarded via disposal services, and these can cost you, depending on the size and weight. It’s not that the companies or collectors are trying to fleece you, but that they in turn need to pay, by weight, for items they transport to disposal sites to be sorted or incinerated.
Items that you want to keep, but won’t need while you are living in rented accommodation, can be kept in storage facilities that you pay a monthly fee for.
Closer to the date of your move, carefully wrap and box all fragile, breakable and valuable items, and consider hand-carrying those bags or boxes yourself instead of leaving them along with the furnishings and clothes to the movers, if you are afraid that others won’t treat your things with as much care as you will.
