HAMILTON JOURNAL NEWS CONSOLIDATING, MOVING - LOCAL12 UPDATE

Downtown Hamilton is taking another hit with news that its hometown newspaper, The Journal News, is moving out of the city and relocating to its headquarters in Liberty Townships.

The Journal's parent company, Cox Publishing wants to move all of its local publications to this main headquarters. The newspaper stresses it will continue to cover Hamilton and Butler County like it always has and readers will not see any changes in content. But as Local 12 reporter Larry Davis tells us, the city of Hamilton is dealing with yet another business loss.

People have been reading the Hamilton Journal News since 1886; the news paper will live on but its headquarters in downtown Hamilton will move on just the latest in a long line of businesses to leave the city.

The newspaper's move out of this landmark building in downtown Hamilton is due in part to the parent company's desire to consolidate its regional newspapers into one building. The Journal News will move its operation into the Cox media group's Northern Cincinnati offices in Liberty Township. Hamilton's mayor hopes the company has second thoughts."I think we can still support a downtown media center but I hope the Journal News does reconsider and realizes it's very important to have a downtown location."

Pat Moeller admits the move is another blow to downtown Hamilton. One by one, businesses have moved on. Elder Beerman, Ohio Casualty, Ohio Lunch, and most recently Fifth Third Bank. But Key Bank has a sign in its window, proudly saying, we're staying. Mayor Moeller says Hamilton City leaders are working on a strategic plan to reinvent downtown.  "We are planning to really have a good visual in this town but also more economic development in our downtown."

And despite the loss of business, the mayor bristles at the notion that downtown Hamilton is dying.  "Anybody who wants to bad mouth Hamilton I want them to give me a call 383 0734, I'll meet with them almost anyplace anytime any day of the week I'll show them some great things about Hamilton, Ohio."

The mayor is hoping the newspaper will reconsider, if not he's hoping to attract another business that will want to move in to this historic building in Hamilton. Mayor Moeller says the city is talking to prospective businesses every day about locating in Hamilton. Just recently, Thyssen Krupp announced it is expanding its operations in Hamilton and adding 60 new jobs.
