Moving and Packing - Moving Soft Items

While it may be true that heavy, delicate and awkward shaped items are the trickiest of all to pack safely, it is just as worthwhile paying attention to how you pack your soft items. Packing clothing, drapes, and linens may seem like nothing more than a matter of folding and placing in a box - but our specialist tips can help make the unpacking and re-settling process much easier!
One of the most useful tools that moving supplies companies offer are wardrobe boxes. If you don’t want to have to re-iron your entire wardrobe, on top of unpacking everything you own, wardrobe boxes are the answer! They are extra-sturdy versions of the regular moving box, with a hanger rail set across the middle top of the box. The wardrobe moving boxes won’t be as large as your regular wardrobe - they are around 25x25x40 inches. Wardrobe moving boxes are also a great investment for storing seasonal clothes in, to keep your regular wardrobe uncluttered.
If you aren't using wardrobe boxes, make sure you line your moving boxes or suitcases with paper before packing your clothes. Mothballs may be a little old-fashioned, but they certainly don’t hurt!
Linens are one of the easier items to pack - large plastic bags can help both to protect the items, and to separate them to make unpacking easier. However, it is a good idea to pack your linens last, as they make for good, inexpensive alternatives to packing supplies and moving supplies like bubble wrap and packing paper.
Packing can often be a messier business than you expect, with unwanted spills, dust and dirt an unfortunate but difficult to avoid part of any move. Mattresses can be difficult to clean, so it is wise to protect them with something like a mattress cover or tarpaulin, rather than letting them go in the truck bareback! If you’re concerned about damage to the springs, a mattress carton offers protection that is a little sturdier.
If you will be storing some of your linens for a period of time, blue tissue paper helps prevent the yellow discoloration that many stored white linens develop - without having to bleach them. Wrap the item in blue tissue paper, then in a plastic suit bag. Push all the air out of the bag, seal it and place it in a moving box.
If you don’t fancy the thought of ironing all your curtains either, instead of folding and placing them in a moving box, use your regular clothing wardrobe. All your clothes will be inwardrobe boxes, so you can hang your drapes over the clothing rail or place them on a padded hanger if they are small enough. Pin them in place and tape the hanger to the rail.
