Tips For Moving A Piano

Moving a piano can be a very tough job that is potentially dangerous; everyone has seen pianos being dropped from ropes in cartoons. While this is probably not likely to happen, there is very real danger because a piano is a heavy object. You should first seek to find a professional piano moving company, or at least a traditional moving company that has dealt with pianos before. They will have the right equipment and all of the skill to do the job in a safe fashion. If you do not want to hire a company or are not able to do so for some reason, the following tips will help you to do the job safely.

Measure First

You want to go through the area where you will be moving the piano and measure all of the different doorways and hallways. You want to be very sure that it will be possible to get the piano through. The most danger comes when you get stuck in a spot that is too small and try to make it work anyway. This can lead to injuries to people who are helping or to damage to the home.

Check The Area

In the same way, you want to check the area where you will be putting the piano. Once it is in place, you will probably not be moving it again. You certainly will not be doing so by yourself. Make sure that the area does not contain heating and cooling vents, as these can be very bad for the fine tuning of the instrument.

Have People On All Sides

Do not try to do the job without enough people. You want to have people on all of the corners, and more on the sides of you can. This will make it so that everyone has support if the piano shifts. Remember that a weight shift can make the people on one side have to do more work. If there is only one person on the far side when it shifts, he will not be able to handle it and could be hurt.

Lift With Your Legs

Never lift with your back. You always want to crouch down and do all of the lifting with the muscles in your legs. That is what they are designed for. That is what they do best. If you lift with your back, you will just throw your spine out of alignment.

Strap The Top Closed

Finally, make sure that the top is closed and strapped down. You do not want it to be moving around while you are trying to maneuver the piano. This could cause damage to the piano and could make it hard to carry.
