Kitchen Tips - Keep Everything Intact While Moving

Of all the rooms in the house, the most difficult to pack is usually the kitchen. Items in the kitchen that aren't breakable are usually heavy and hard. Many things in the kitchen are an odd, awkward size - bowls don't always stack inside each other within your moving box, and while the bulk of your frying pan fits, the handle doesn't! We look at some specialist tips on packing supplies and techniques for your kitchen.

You will need some specialist moving supplies for packing your kitchen items that aren't usually necessary elsewhere in the house. Dish packs are used by the professionals - in contrast to regular moving boxes, these are made from double walled, corrugated cardboard. Crushed paper or bubble wrap is essential for the corners of the boxes, both for cushioning and to help prevent items slipping around inside the moving box.

When packing glassware and china, wrap it in several sheets of clean paper. The ink from newspaper can often bleed onto items wrapped with it, especially in hot weather or when items are to be stored for extended periods. However, after you have an inner layer of packing paper, newspaper can be used to save money. Put the largest flat china or glass items at the bottom of a dish pack moving box, and pack crushed paper or bubble wrap around them in the corners. Use cardboard sheets as a layer divider inside your moving box - then if your next-smallest size of plates will fit with two to a layer, you can put them in without trying to balance them on the lower plates. When you are finished packing china, always mark the box 'FRAGILE - THIS WAY UP', for your movers. You can imagine how their hearts would sink to hear 'clang-clang-clang-smash!' as they tipped a box on its side!

Bowls, including mixing bowls, are not always best packed right-way-up. Mixing bowls or deep salad bowls may be best wrapped and put upside down in the moving box for stability. You can stand shallow bowls on their edge inside the moving box to help fill the space, as long as they are well wrapped and cushioned.

For two-part items like sugar bowls and cream pitchers, wrap the lid in tissue paper and place it upside down in the bowl before wrapping the entire item altogether. Small items like this are often best packed in your moving boxes upright.

Cups are similar to mixing bowls, in that the upper rim is almost always larger than the bottom. Pack cups upside down also for stability. Use packing paper and cardboard dividers as extra moving supplies to separate layers within your moving boxes.

While silverware itself may not be breakable, you need to be aware of what you are packing it with. Loose silverware in a moving box could make short work of all of your cups and plates, if they aren't packed properly. Use packing paper to keep your silverware or plain cutlery out of the way of china or dishes.
