Top tips for moving home
by Michael Miller
Moving home can be a stressful time, with a "to-do list" as long as your arm and all the usual demands of daily life that won't just magically go away when you click your fingers. But with a little thought and planning for the future, you could save yourself a fair bit of hassle when it comes to the enormous task of upping sticks and moving into a brand new pad. Here are some tips to think about before, during and after your move . . .
Firstly, plan ahead and make sure you have the removal vans booked well in advance of your moving date so you can plan to the exact day and have the peace of mind that at least the moving of your belongings will be taken care of. Booking in advance also means you can take the time to find a reputable company who come recommended and will be a removal team you can rely on.
Also, make sure to have a packing plan. Pack methodically, and start with those things you use less frequently building up to the night before your move where you will pack your box of essentials to be opened first on the other end, including your toiletries, the kettle etc. It is a good idea to label boxes as you go, so that you won't have to play a game of pass the parcel when you arrive in your new home.
There is also never a better time than when you're moving house to make a fresh start and throw out all that clutter that you never use. If an item is valuable then consider taking it to auction - you could find that you make a nice bit of money. Alternatively, you could pile all of your unwanted goods into a bin bag and take them down to a well deserving charity shop that will surely be able to put all of your odds and ends to better use.
Finally it might sound obvious, but don't forget to inform companies and services you use that you are moving home. Many service providers will allow you to take your existing home broadband or gas and electricity package with you, which makes settling in a whole lot easier. It might also be an idea to let your neighbours know that you've left as well, to avoid any concern from them over your wellbeing!
When you get there, open a big bottle of champagne, pat yourself on the back, sit back and relax. Moving house is stressful, but you made it this far, now all you have to do is start unpacking . . .
