Rory McIlroy shot 80 in the second round of last year’s Open Championship – the unfortunate sacrificial lamb on a day when play was temporarily halted because the wind caused the ball to oscillate on the green for many players. In similar conditions on Sunday, McIlroy again briefly felt the wrath of the Open wind.
On the seventh green, McIlroy grounded his putter behind his ball at the par-5 only for it to move on him. Per the Rules of Golf, that is a penalty and subject to one penalty stroke. The Ulsterman went from par to bogey on the hole as his weekend struggles continue at Royal St. George’s.
The penalty got McIlroy to 2-over on his round, where he still is through 11 holes.
The USGA and R&A have considered making alterations to the rule under which McIlroy was penalized, but those changes would not have helped him in that situation.
