FAST-MOVING STORM FELL CEMETERY - THE INDEPENDENT NEWS

A storm quickly blew through Grand Island Friday evening, leaving behind severe tree damage at the Grand Island Cemetery.

"There are massive trees down at the cemetery," said Fire Captain Bryan Stutzman who came back to Station No. 3 on Webb Road from a call to find trees across the road and damage to the building's roof.

He said it sucked a hole in the roof and scattered insulation around the station, but as far as he could see at about 9 p.m. the storm took the hardest toll on the cemetery at the corner of Webb and Stolley Park roads.

Stutzman estimated that a 20-foot tree was blocking Webb Road near the Dinsdale car dealership, but the Grand Island street crews were quick to respond and get it off of the road.

Joe Guerrero, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hastings, said they were hearing similar reports from Grand Island.

He said a northwesterly moving storm with winds in excess of 50 mph and pea size hail hit Grand Island at about 8:20 p.m., then quickly moved into Merrick County.

"It was moving about 35 mph," Guerrero said.
