"There are massive trees down at the cemetery," said Fire Captain Bryan Stutzman who came back to Station No. 3 on Webb Road from a call to find trees across the road and damage to the building's roof.
He said it sucked a hole in the roof and scattered insulation around the station, but as far as he could see at about 9 p.m. the storm took the hardest toll on the cemetery at the corner of Webb and Stolley Park roads.
Joe Guerrero, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hastings, said they were hearing similar reports from Grand Island.
He said a northwesterly moving storm with winds in excess of 50 mph and pea size hail hit Grand Island at about 8:20 p.m., then quickly moved into Merrick County.
"It was moving about 35 mph," Guerrero said.
