MIAMI, July 18 (UPI) -- Tropical Storm Bret was strengthening as it moved away from the Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday.
At 5 p.m. EDT, the center of the storm was about 130 miles north of Great Abaco Island in the northern Bahamas, with sustained winds of 65 mph and headed north-northeast at 7 mph.
The government of the Bahamas canceled all tropical storm warnings.
Observations by an Air Force Reserve unit Hurricane Hunter indicated the increase in sustained winds, the Miami center said. Some additional strengthening of sustained winds was expected overnight, and Bret could approach hurricane strength over the ocean.
Tropical storm force winds extended outward for up to 50 miles, the center said.
