Movers Charge for Boxes - Avoid Extra Costs by Packing Items in a Box
What Items Should Be Packed in a Box?

By Diane Schmidt, About.com Guide

My sister recently moved and it was only after the movers arrived, did they tell her that she can’t use garbage bags to pack her child’s clothes. They insisted that she pack all clothing and pillows in box, which they generously provided – for an extra charge. Find out which items should be packed in a box - - items that you might think don't require a box - before the movers arrive so you can avoid extra costs.

What Needs to Be Packed in a BoxFirst rule is, if it can fit in a box, it needs to be packed in a box. Just because your child’s small bean bag chair is a chair, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be packed in a box. As my sister found out, this includes clothes, pillows and small rugs. To help, here’s the complete list of items that you might think don’t belong in a box, but they do:

Clothes: Don’t use garbage bags – they rip too easily and can’t support other items. Pack clothes in wardrobe boxes or in larger moving boxes.

Shoes and Boots

Coats and Jackets

Pillows, Quilts and Bedding

Small lamps and Lampshades: Find out how to pack lamps and pack lampshades.

Small to Medium-sized Rugs

Drapes and Blinds

Electronic Equipment (radios, DVD players, stereos, speakers): Most electronic equipment should be packed properly, not only to help your movers move it safely, but also to ensure that the equipment arrives in one piece. The one exception might be the TV. Ask your mover if they prefer the TV to be packed and if they do, contact an electronic store to see if they can supply you with an appropriate box. Find out more about packing electronic equipment. Also, learn more about how to pack and move a big-screen TV.

Small Stools, Chairs and Ottomans: Again, they need to be small enough to fit in a box, so stools that you use for your bar area don’t need to be packed. If in doubt, ask the mover.

Computers: Similar to other electronic equipment, you’ll want to make sure your computer is packed properly, which means finding a good, strong box and ensuring the computer doesn’t move around inside it. Find out more about how to pack your computer.

Kitchen Equipment: All small appliances need to be packed in a box. That includes blenders, slow cookers and deep fryers. Find out more about packing kitchen equipment.

Pots and Pans: Even large stock pots and cookie pans need to be packed in a box.

Pictures, Wall Hangings and Small Mirrors: To ensure pictures arrive safely, it’s a good idea to purchase specialty boxes. Find out how to pack pictures and frames.

Tools and Some Outdoor Equipment: Hand tools need to be packed in a box. If you have outdoor equipment that is small enough to fit in a box, box it: for example, small weed eater or shrub trimmer.

Toys and Outdoor Play Equipment: Pack all toys (not matter how big) into boxes, along with any outdoor equipment such as swings and wading pools.
