How to Move Successfully in Just Eight Weeks

By John Cherry on November 21, 2011

Moving is a complicated process, but if you organize yourself and start early, you can make your move easier and more pleasant to endure. Here is a checklist to help you move yourself efficiently and virtually stress free in just eight weeks.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Get a three-ring binder where you will store your moving details

2. Determine whether you are going to move yourself or hire a professional mover to do it for you. Compare and contrast the benefits of the two options, including how much each will ultimately cost. Sometimes, moving yourself is not the most economical choice when you factor every cost in.

3. If you decide to hire professional movers, book the company you choose immediately. If you decide to move yourself, but rent a truck, reserve your vehicle as soon as possible. Especially in the summer, moving companies and rental trucks get booked up quickly and can force you to delay your move.

4. Find out if you can write your moving expenses off of your taxes.

7 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Go through your items in storage and designate them as items to sell, donate, throw away, or keep.

2. Determine what you are going to do with your large appliances. Are you going to leave them, take them with you, or sell them?

3. Begin using the food you already have in your freezer for meals.

4. Dispose of hazardous materials such as paint, cleaning products, gas, oil, or antifreeze properly by contacting the proper authorities.

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Begin gathering boxes from your grocery store or liquor store.

2. Appraise any valuables that you will be moving or shipping.

5 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Visit your post office and submit your change-of-address forms.

2. If you are moving out of state, find out what the requirements are for your driver's license and automobile registration in the new state.

3. Obtain your kids' school records from their current school and register them in their new school.

4. Contact your insurance companies to let them know you are moving.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. If you belong to any organizations, notify them of your new address so they can transfer your membership records.

2. Seek out referrals for doctors in your new area and make appointments to meet them. Obtain your medical records or have them transferred to your new physician.

3. Inventory all of your possessions.

4. Begin packing non-essential items.

3 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Obtain a two-month supply of any prescriptions and transfer existing prescriptions to a pharmacy in your new area.

2. If you have pets, ask your vet about how best to move them.

3. Find out what your insurance will cover during a move and ensure that both your old and new houses are covered.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

1. Settle all of your local accounts with dry cleaners, film developers, and other service providers.

2. Notify utility companies of the cut-off date for your old house and the turn-on date for your new house.

3. Pack all of your valuable items that will be moved personally by you.

1 Week Before Moving Day

1. Clean out, unplug, defrost, and dry out your refrigerators and freezers2. Pack a suitcase for each member of the family containing items you will need between now and when the moving truck delivers your belongings to your new house.

3. Pack one final box with all items you will need immediately upon arriving at your new house.

Follow this checklist and your move will be smoother than you ever thought it could be.
