Guard Against Moving Theft by Accepting Help from People You Trust

By Ron Leshnower, About.com Guide

Renters who don't have much furniture and aren't moving far often can get away with not hiring a professional moving company. Instead, it may pay to rent a truck (or borrow a friend's van) and ask one or more people you know to help.

If you go this route for your next move, be careful about whom you choose to help you. Whether it's a friend, relative, neighbor, or friend of a friend, only accept someone's help if you're confident that you can trust the person. People who take part in your move gain easy access to your personal belongings, including valuables and important documents. If someone takes something, you may not notice the theft until days after you've moved. At that point, it may be difficult to prove that something was stolen during the move, or even to identify or locate the thief.

Play it safe by choosing trustworthy people to help you move. If, for instance, an apartment neighbor whom you barely know offers to help, consider accepting the help as long as he'll be around others whom you know well and trust.
