Tips for Greening Up Your Move

Save the Environment and Money with a Greener Move

By Diane Schmidt, About.com Guide

Moving can have a huge impact on our ecological footprint - all those boxes and tape and packing paper that end up in the trash, never mind the long-distance hauls and all those emissions.
Trying to move while being aware of how to limit your contribution to waste does take a little extra planning and preparation; in the end, however, it can save you money and will definitely make you feel better that you've helped the environment - a win-win situation for everyone.

1. Use Recycled Materials for a Greener Move

Moving requires a lot of packing materials, most of which are difficult to recycle. Find out how to cut back on packing popcorn, moving boxes and other items that add to the garbage pile.

2. Moving and Packing with Used Boxes

With most of us pinching our pennies right now, finding ways to save on moving costs not only helps keep money in our wallets, but can also help the planet by reusing packing materials and reducing waste.

3. Protect Your Things with Recycled Paper

All of us have extra paper, so why not put it to good use?

4. Get Rid of Stuff Without Throwing it in the Trash

The first place to start is to determine what to sell. Sometimes, because of time or because I want to help the local community, I forgo selling my things in favor of donation. It's up to you; either way, someone else is benefiting from your things and keeping it out of the landfill.

5. How to Recycle Packing Supplies

Moving can not only be hard on you, but it can also add a lot of waste to the environment. When you're planning your move, make sure you take into consideration the time and effort of properly disposing of items and try to choose packing products that can be recycled.
So whether it's plastics, computers or paint, use this list to help determine what can be recycled and how.

6. Recycle Moving Boxes After You Move

Once you've moved and unpacked, most of us have accumulated so many boxes that it's a struggle just to make it to the curb for garbage pick up. While you're anxious to get rid of those cardboard boxes, there are other means of disposal other than taking them to the curb. Here's a list of just some of the ways you can put those well-used boxes to good use.
