Doing it yourself.
While both options needs a cash output, it is very much possible to avoid you paying more than you need to be anticipating, and budgeting for, those “hidden” moving costs, which could pop-up unexpectedly and hit your pocket. All you have to do is to be alert.
Though paying experts to handle your move sounds like stress-less option, it might cost you more in transportation and labor charges. The mover paid by hour based might not work quite as fast as you would prefer, while those paid by the job can rush the move to get to your next location, a result could be that it would be mishandled, or damaged property. Hence the type of contract you select must be decided after consulting the moving company.
Research yourself
While the moving cost of any long-distance move is centrally synchronized based on weight and distance traveled, be ready for fine-print charges that could be added up quickly. For example:
A transportation surcharge if the moving companies recompense its movers for work performed in certain areas where labor rates were higher.
Charges for moving heavy items such as riding lawnmowers, snowmobiles or any of your baby grand pianos.
Additional charge for experts brought in to disconnect gas mains or even disassemble pianos and pool tables.
Additional charge if the moving company has to walk more than 75 feet from door to truck or require using stairs or an elevator.
Also, if the moving truck is too big to fit down your small street, or is let down by low hanging wires or any branches, the movers might need to shuttle your furnishings out on a minor truck first, a situation that could become very costly. Always look for and discuss, probable “hidden” costs with the moving company’s sales
