Confused.com’s Moving House Checklist

For a stress-free move, check you’ve got the right boxes, vehicles and home insurance.

Moving house can be pretty stressful, there are papers to sign, boxes to pack and mail to redirect. So make the ordeal as stress-free as possible by havingConfused.com’s moving house checklist to hand.

Prepare for the move

It isn’t until you’re moving house you realise how much ‘stuff’ you’ve accumulated. So in the lead up to the big move, it’s time to get ruthless and get organised.
Have a clean out: Use the move as an opportunity to throw out, recycle and sell items you no longer need. Take bags to the local charity shop or go along to a car boot sale.
Collect boxes: A moving company will provide some boxes, but you’ll always need more, so head to your local supermarket. Remember, boxes need to be carried so don’t over fill them. Pack heavier items in smaller boxes.
Protective wrapping: Keep an eye out for old newspapers and tissue paper. They’re a cheap way to protect breakables.
Top tip: Check your home insurance covers any breakages. You’ll be doing well to move house without breaking something!

The DIY removal

Moving house can be an expensive exercise. So if your savings are already depleted, why not move yourself? All you need is the right equipment, some loyal friends and a budget for pizza and wine at the end of the day.
Hire a van: Book one in advance so you get the right van for your needs at the cheapest price. The hire company should provide fullvan insurance as part of the price, but ask whether any excess applies.
Cover your contents: Are your possessions covered from damage and theft during your move? Many companies only provide protection if a professional company is used, so check your home insurance and household contents policy.
Top tip: If you’re hiring a van, make sure you’ve got the right licence. If you passed your driving test before 1 January 1997, the largest vehicle you can drive on a normal licence is 7.5 tonnes. If you passed after 1 January 1997, your limit is 3.5 tonnes. The same applies when towing.

Call the professionals

If you’re moving from a large property with numerous possessions, it’s a good idea to call in the professionals. It will mean paying more money upfront, but you’ll save yourself a headache in the long run.
Get a quote: Check the British Association of Removers for reputable removal companies. Get a number of quotes and once you’ve found a company that meets your budget, book them at least two weeks before you move.
Check before your sign: Take a careful look at the small print before signing up and handing over money. Ask about their insurance as well. You want to ensure you’re covered should the company damage anything

What you need to provide

The moving company will ask you for information, including:
  • When you want the removal team to arrive
  • How much furniture you’re moving
  • How many boxes need to be shifted – this will give the company an idea of how long the move will take
  • Is there any furniture that will not fit down the staircase or through doors?
  • Do arrangements need to be made for parking spaces at either/both properties?
Top tip: Pack your possessions rather than getting the moving company too. This will reduce the cost overall.
Moving house can be exhausting but it’s also exciting. You’ll be moving into a brand new place you can call home – just make sure you and your possessions are covered.
